Journal-Living like Weasels

A response to Anne Dillard's Living like Weasels

In living like weasels, Anne Dillard, thoroughly explains what she got out of her encounter with a weasel. She was spending a day in nature when she met the weasels’ glare. After he disappeared she considered what it would be like to live like a weasel; to live in necessity and not by choices.

To live in necessity would be a carefree life, you would provide only for yourself and only when it was needed. But we as human beings are overachievers at times. We are always trying to get ahead so we never fall behind. We are always concerned about making ends meet. Annie Dillard has a good point about living like this weasel; we would let the concern and anxiety go and have only what we need and we would still be considered successful. Even with this type of success that the weasel has, we would be living a monotonous lifestyle. Doing the same things day in and day out. We would be without the guidance and friendships we have and the world we live in would be a very selfish world.  Everyone would be fighting with each other for the necessities. With no rules or regulations we would look like a pack of angry dogs; but we would survive. By living this type of lifestyle there would be no need for God, because of this I struggle to completely agree with Anne Dillard. While she has good points, I don’t completely agree. For example, over the summer I traveled to Cancun, Mexico. We visited a place called Tulum.  The beach there is considered one of the top ten beaches in the world. When standing at the top of the Mayan ruins and looked out to the ocean I got an unexplainable feeling of awe and amazement. I remember thinking, “how could someone see this and believe it all happened by chance?” Mostly it was a reassurance of my faith.  God made this gorgeous ocean; he can take care of these needs in my life. For this reason I believe living like weasels wouldn’t benefit us. We would be relying on ourselves instead of the God that created us to need him.
